The tradition of use of diamond ring as engagement ring started in the second century B.C. The marketing campaign ‘A diamond is forever’ created the trend for diamond engagement ring in late 1940. The marketing and social pressure has created the perception of the price of an engagement ring correlated with how much he loves his fiancée.
Diamonds are pretty, they sparkle, but love is not measured by the size of the diamond. A 5 carat diamond doesn’t mean he loves you more, non-diamond ring doesn’t mean he loves you less.
‘I worked at a national jewellery company, I sold diamonds. I’ve heard many lovely cute stories. I’ve also heard stories like my girlfriend requests a diamond that’s worth 4 weeks of the pay. There is one story I will remember forever, a gentlemen purchased a $100 sterling silver ring, kneed down and proposed to his beloved girl at the store, and of course the girl said ‘Yes’, she cried with happiness.’
It can be diamond, but it doesn’t have to be diamond. More importantly, the ring means something for both of you and it reflects moments that both of you share.
It’s not about the price of the ring, it’s those little things count.
